White Heat daily sled survey
Survey Guidelines and Instructions:
The
survey consists of several questions with room for note taking and
comments. It should take only a few minutes to complete and we have
tried to make it easy to do on a handheld device. Most of the questions
are self-explanatory. Try to fill in a survey for each day trip either
during the day (for example while taking a lunch break) or as soon as
possible when you return.
Here are some guidelines for some of the questions:
Experience: Use the following definitions and mark a number in the appropriate place for each member of the group:
1. Beginner snowmobiler who travels on groomed roads and trails.
2.
Intermediate snowmobiler can leave the trail and navigate into the
backcountry. They can play on small hills and confidently carve turns in
powder.
3. Strong snowmobiler can negotiate most off trail
terrain and is confident highmarking on steep, open slopes and weaving
through tight trees and other technical obstacles.
4.
Advanced/Expert snowmobiler can negotiate 90%+ of the terrain available
to ride. They can maintain a consistent sidehill in steep, open terrain.
They can reverse 180 degrees and re-ascend a slope they are descending.
5.
Extreme snowmobiler is only limited by the power of his/her machine. They can
ride all terrain and maintain a steep sidehill with obstacles in front
of and below (trees, rocks, cliffs). They can drive their sled exactly
where they want to go in most all circumstances.
The ski tracks
app allows you to take photos and tag them on the GPS track. Please take
some photos of things of interest such as snow conditions or snowpack
assessments you carried out. Feel free to make notes on any aspect of
your day on the last page.
We ask that you use the same email you used in the preseason survey and the one you use to send in your GPS tracks. Your information will not be
shared, copied, or otherwise made public.
