The DLF Technologies of Surveillance Working Group is making two evolutionary changes in 2020:

We are updating the name and scope of the Working Group
We are restructuring our sub-groups to reflect both past accomplishments and current interests

These changes are motivated by feedback from our member community as expressed at the DLF Forum 2019 and through feedback surveys distributed in January 2020.

The survey below asks members of the DLF community to provide additional input on the two items above.

First, please vote for a new name of our working group. We have provided two options, derived from prior feedback from the community.

Second, please express your interest in potential new sub-groups. Based on your responses, we will form sub-groups around the areas that receive the most interest.

The survey will remain open through March 3, and the results will be discussed at the next all-group call at 1pm Eastern on March 4.

Ethical Service Design: examining ethical approaches to designing technology-oriented library services
Strategic Engagement with Administration: identifying effective strategies for engaging with library administration on topics related to privacy and ethics
Data Governance: advancing practices for the collection, storage, usage, sharing, retention, and deaccessioning of user data and student data.
Cross-Organizational Collaborations: building relationships with related organizations and initiatives, such as the Library Freedom Project, the ALA Office of Intellectual Freedom, and IMLS-funded privacy projects.
EdTech: investigating technology in the wider landscape of higher education, including AI, facial recognition, biometrics, and predictive analytics
Technologies of Surveillance: continuing to develop strategies for resisting surveillance in libraries and universities
Instruction, Outreach, and Advocacy: developing practices and materials related to instruction, outreach, and advocacy of privacy and ethics in technology
Vendor-built Systems: interrogating the systems that libraries purchase or lease, such as an ILS or database.
